ROME –The YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley hosted their annual Healthy Kids Day this weekend and, according to YMCA marketing director Mary Alice Golden, it was a “great success.”
On Thursdaay, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), a YMCA partner, conducted a 45-minute presentation on Internet Safety at Denti Elementary School.
Besides making educational presentations, such as Thursday’s, NCMEC has also provided the YMCA with training for YMCA staff for over the past year.
The fun continued at the Rome YMCA during the weekend. On Saturday, the YMCA hosted their Healthy Kids Day. The event was open to children and their families and was free to attend.
Healthy Kids Day began at 9 a.m. and lasted until 1 p.m. The day featured family oriented events such as Zumba, family “Caveman” class and a family obstacle course. The Delta Divers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Rome Hospital, Rome Fish Hatchery, Rome Fire Department and at least 20 other organizations were all on hand. Sport demonstrations included baseball, boxing, water polo, water basketball and water volleyball. Food was available courtesy of Emily’s Tastebuds, BOCES students offered free massages and there was also face painting, arts and crafts and a coloring contest.
As a continuation of Healthy Kids Day, a special guest speaker arrived at the Rome YMCA.
From 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. former NBA all-star Tyrone Curtis “Muggsy” Bogues appeared. The 5’3’’ retired Bogues talked about the benefits of hard work and determination.
“You have got to believe in yourself,” Bogues told the packed Rome YMCA gym of kids and adults.
“You have to have that confidence. People are going to say you cannot but you have that understanding that you can if you work hard.”
Bogues also described to the audience the benefits of staying active and remaining a student-athlete. Continued…

Bogues also held a mini-clinic for a select group of kids at the Y.
“Everybody enjoyed Muggsy,” Golden attested.
On the following day, Sunday, the Rome YMCA and the Roman Runners hosted a 2 ½ mile historic walk through Rome. The event began at 9 a.m. with guided tours leaving every 15 minutes until 11 a.m. Although the weather was not ideal, the walk/run still had close to 70 registrants and made a few hundred dollars for the Mary Rose Center of Oneida.
“We rate our success on people coming through the door and not dollars,” Golden said. “Overall, at all three locations, we counted that over a couple of thousand people came through the doors.”
Updates on upcoming YMCA events will be available soon.
